How to Keep a Car From Getting Dusty?

It can be pretty frustrating when you notice dust accumulating on the inside or outside of your car.

But can you actually keep the dust away, or do you just have to keep dusting for the rest of eternity?

To keep your car from getting dusty, you must take some precautions inside and outside your vehicle. In the interior, you should avoid using the air conditioner and replace your cabin’s air filter often. To keep dust off the exterior, you should use a paint sealant and cover your vehicle when parked.

In this article, I will discuss how to keep dust off the interior and exterior of your car.

I will also talk about whether it is even possible to get rid of all the dust inside and outside of your vehicle.

4 Methods to Keep Your Car’s Interior From Getting Dusty

When it comes to keeping dust off your car’s interior, you need to follow as many of the suggestions below as you can.

Doing so will keep cabin dust to a minimum.

Method One: Don’t Use Your Air Conditioner or Heater

When you use your air conditioner or heater, your car pulls in air from outside.

And this air can carry all types of contaminants, including dust.

So, whenever possible, refrain from using the air conditioner and heater to reduce dust build-up.

Now, of course, never using the air conditioner or heater is not an option for everyone, especially if you live in a very hot or cold climate.

But, to prevent dust, you really should only use them when you need to do so.

You should especially keep them off when you drive down unpaved roads because the potential for getting dust inside your vehicle is much greater in these conditions.

Instead of using the air or heat, think about trying out the air re-circulator.

This feature circulates the air already in your car rather than pulling from outside so that more dust doesn’t get in.

In most vehicles, you can identify the air re-circulator because it will have an image of a car with a sideways U-turn sign.

Method Two: Replace Your Cabin Air Filter Often

Keeping your cabin air filter clean is one of the best ways to stop dust from getting into your car.

As I stated above, when you have the air conditioner or heater on, your vehicle sucks in air from outside.

But, the air first moves through the cabin air filter, which collects dust and other debris before it enters your interior.

If your cabin air filter is dirty, though, it will not do a good job of cleaning the air, and dust will get into your car.

Overall, you should change your cabin air filter about every 15,000 miles.

However, you may need a replacement more often if you drive on a lot of unpaved roads.

Typically, your cabin air filter needs replacing when your vents don’t blow as well as they used to, they expel bad-smelling air, or the fan starts making noise.

Method Three: Use Antistatic Products

Static electricity occurs when two surfaces rub against each other and create a build-up of friction.

And this friction can accumulate on surfaces in your car and attract dust particles.

To prevent static electricity on your interior surfaces, you should use an antistatic product.

So, go ahead and purchase one of the many antistatic products on the market and use it on your dashboard and other hard surfaces.

Doing so should keep the amount of dust in your car to a minimum.

Method Four: Keep Your Windows Closed

Since dust gets in your car mainly from particles in the outside air, it’s a good idea to keep your windows closed whenever possible.

Plus, keeping dust out of your car isn’t the only benefit of leaving your windows up.

It could also save your hearing since outside traffic noise can easily reach over 100 decibels, which may end up harming your ears in the long run.

3 Methods to Keep Your Car’s Exterior From Getting Dusty

Of course, dust will not only build up in your vehicle’s interior.

Thus, you also need to take action to keep it off the outside of your car.

Method One: Use a Paint Sealant

Paint sealant does more than keep your paint glossy and protected.

It also helps prevent dust and other grime from sticking to your exterior.

You see, paint sealant creates a thin layer on the surface of your vehicle’s paint, which improves your car’s dust resistance.

And luckily, paint sealant is easy to use and lasts up to a year, depending on the product and your typical driving conditions.

Method Two: Keep Your Car Covered When Parked

When it comes to keeping your car covered when parked, you have plenty of options.

Of course, one possibility is to use a tarp to protect your car when you aren’t driving.

Just remember, though, that if you want the best results from using a tarp, you should choose one that fits your car correctly.

Otherwise, debris could easily get in under the tarp and onto your car’s surface.

Another option is to park your car in your garage.

Your garage will protect your vehicle from wind, which often blows up dust and other debris that can accumulate on your car.

Yet, remember that, for best results, you should dust your garage often.

Alternatively, you could use buildings to help keep dust off your vehicle.

When you go to park your car, pay attention to which direction the wind is blowing.

Then, park your car close to the side of the building that will shield your vehicle from the wind.

Doing so will keep a considerable amount of dust off your car.

Method Three: Wash Your Car Often

Washing your car may only seem like a way to eliminate dust, not prevent it.

But, did you know that having dust on your car will actually attract more dust, leading to a rapidly growing problem?

So, try to wash your car as often as you can reasonably do so.

In general, experts agree that it is best to wash your car about twice a month.

Is it Possible to Keep All Dust Off My Vehicle?

No, it is not possible to keep all dust off the interior and exterior of your vehicle.

Dust is all around us all the time.

It comes from the atmosphere, plant life, and even in our own skin.

In fact, about 20% to 50% of the dust inside homes and cars is dead skin cells

Therefore, you won’t be able to get rid of all the dust inside and outside your vehicle.

However, by using the methods above, you can keep a large amount of dust away from your car and prevent it from sticking to vehicle surfaces.

Conclusion

The best way to keep dust off your vehicle is to be proactive about keeping it away.

You can do this by preventing dust from clinging to your car and shielding your vehicle from it in the first place.
